“In the prairie-style gardens around her nursery in the Netherlands, Lianne Pot has created a richly coloured ecosystem that buzzes with life.”

About Lianne
My name is Lianne Pot. Planting designer with a passion for ornamental grasses, prairie gardens and plant communities. In the year 2000 I started my ornamental grass company and garden design agency. My design of the prairie garden in the Wilp was created in 2008, which was realized in the year 2009. Then I specialized more and more in making planting designs in a European prairie atmosphere.
Profession
I create colorful plant communities. A well-functioning system of plants and ornamental grasses without additional addition of water or nutrition. This has been my specialty since 2009. I like to create beautiful borders and gardens that stand out for the many plants and grasses. That are well coordinated in terms of growth, shape and height and form a sustainable plant community.
In recent years I have been able to design many planting designs. Making specialist planting plans has really become my profession. Inspired by plant communities such as the prairie, steppe or savannah. There are so many possibilities. It is always important to look carefully at the environment, the type of soil and location for the plants. See my Portfolio for examples.
The prairie garden in the Wilp
In 2009 my 3,500 m2 prairie garden was created. In this garden, the ‘prairie idea’ has been adhered to as much as possible: an open and spacious plain. Sight lines on the open landscape all around, as far as possible no hedges. A few trees to connect with the surrounding landscape.
The design I made has round shapes, the path pattern resembles the shape of an oak leaf. I wanted to show a wide range of possibilities of possible prairie plantings in large boxes (where you can walk between the plants).
Steppe garden
For a new section in my garden, I was inspired by the somewhat lower grass and sagebrush steppe areas in the states of Nevada and Utah. The atmosphere in these areas is breathtaking. In this new steppe garden, pol forming blue-leaved grasses are used, spicy perennials and spontaneously sowing upright fillers. Species that bring shape, color and structure throughout the season. Bees, butterflies and bumblebees are attracted from early to late in the season because, in addition to many early flowering species, many late insect lures are also used. A great promise for people and animals!
